Trend Watching: Katharina Kiéck at the Nailab

This article was written by Naijeria Toweett, Kenya’s newest Trend Scout.

Trend Expert and trend Analyst Katherina Kiéck was in Nairobi in October to introduce Trend Watching and the Trend Business to those who were interested.

With everything in business beginning and ending with the customers, it is key for any business to know understand its customer. It is imperative that one considers their likely consumer behavior and preference in the short and long term. With consumer behavior and preference changing ever so fast on both a local and global scale, gaining consumer insight has never been so important.

What is a consumer trend? – “A novel manifestation of something that has unlocked and serviced and existing (and hardly ever changing) consumer need, desire, want or value”. 15Trend Tips – trend watching .com . It is the ever changing, rapidly so, consumer trends that have companies, brands, NGO’s and governments under pressure to innovate to meet the needs of their consumers. These institutions are relying more and more on individuals and companies specialized in Trend Watching and analysis to provide a constant evolving outlook into the next season, year or decade. Trend Scout therefore are individuals who are on the lookout for new, intelligent, structure changing and mass market ready products and services.

The two day workshop was important and timely since Kenya is identified as one of the emerging market in Africa with many investors and big business looking to capitalize on this. Therefore, it would be imperative for them to better understand the country and by extension sub Saharan Africa.

Apart from understanding the difference between Mega, Macro and Micro trends, the team got a chance to identify African micro trends. Katherina also provided the team with insights on how to apply trend scouting skills in their areas of work and how that can not only be a source of new ideas and innovations but also an alternative source of income.

Two participants were selected to become freelance Trendscouts with Trend One , John Oballa and Naijeria Toweett. The two will receive continuous mentoring and coaching from Katherina.

Nailab’s Isaac Osiemo Featured on Daily Nation

Nailab’s own Isaac Osiemo was featured in Daily Nation’s “Smart Company” on Monday…Read the article below.  SO proud of you Zac!!!

Isaac "Zac" Osiemo

Kenya: Soaring High With ‘Msema Kweli’

Charles Wokabi

10 October 2011

At only 21 years, Mr Omani Isaac Osiemo runs his own company and will be representing Kenya at a global IT event next year.

The second-year Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student is part of a new breed of Kenyan youth who have taken to software development.

At JKUAT he is pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science, Information and Technology. It was not always his career choice.

“I wanted to take up a career in aviation, specifically flying planes,” he says.

He changed his mind when he discovered he could fly high by pursuing a different career. As he has discovered now, IT will let him fly around the world.

When not in class, Mr Osiemo runs Semasoft Limited, a software development and Web solutions company.

The Kisii High School graduate is the brains behind Msema Kweli software, developed to help Kenyans monitor Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects.

With an Android handset, you can easily download the application software and access full details of CDF projects in your area — from financial allocation to implementation.

“You can also post comments, complaints and recommendations on the projects. It is a platform for Kenyans to air their views on how their money is being used,” Mr Osiemo says.

“For instance, if a big number of people speak negatively about a project, that may be reason for further assessment,” he says.

The application won the first position in the Appcircus competition (featuring students with the best mobile applications) held at Nairobi’s iHub last month.

That opened the doors for nomination to attend the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona in February.

Mr Osiemo believes Kenyans can rise as high as people in the West in technology innovation.

“If 16-year-olds in America and Europe can make softwares that are used across continents, Kenyans too can,” he says.

He adds that you can only be as backward as you let yourself to be. With modern technology, he notes, you can access classified information even from your mobile phone.

Mr Osiemo wakes up at five o’clock every morning to study. Sometimes he sleeps for less than three hours a day as he has to cater for his customers’ needs and his school work.

“I have to balance my work, projects and school,” he says.

For technologists, reading widely is important as it helps them analyse problems facing society and employ their knowledge to provide solutions.

For example, Msema Kweli was designed to solve the problem of financial unaccountability, especially on CDF allocations.

“I received some complaints on functionalities of the software and re-called it for rectification, then released it back to society,” he says.

Mr Osiemo has now changed from regular classes, which run during the day, to part-time classes in the evening.

During the day, he meets clients, runs his company and attends a six-week Nokia scholarship, thanks to his Msema Kweli victory at Appcircus.

Incorporated just two months ago, Semasoft Limited contracts at least four people and has earned over Sh600,000 in profit so far. The firm operates from Nailab offices on Ngong Road, a business incubation firm.

Mr Osiemo believes that Kenya has a lot to offer, especially in mobile phone technology.

“We have enough resources to raise our own Bill Gates (Microsoft) and Steve Job (Apple),” he says.

But the biggest problem here is over reliance on foreign solutions, he notes, adding: “The notion that foreign things are better than locally developed ones affects virtually all industries.”

“I once qualified for an application development job with a Black American entrepreneur, but when we set up a Skype call and he discovered I am African, he said he does not work with Africans.”

Mr Osiemo says Kenyans and other Africans should appreciate and nurture their own talent

“The government should help in developing young talent in Kenya to maturity.” he says.

Besides Msema Kweli, Mr Osiemo has also made the iRelief software to ease in distribution of food aid during disasters, and the Kamata Kab application, which won the Garage 48 competition. The application helps travellers locate the nearest taxi to their location.

Mr Osiemo hopes to bring up his company to become a top problem solver in technology.

He says he is not worried about people who steal his ideas and softwares.

“If someone steals from you, it just means you to work a lot harder and develop even greater ideas and softwares,” he says.

Ghafla!: Turning Tragedy to Triumph

One of our biggest success stories at Nailab is Ghafla! And if you are an active member of the Kenyan tech scene, you have probably heard of  them.  Ghafla is the hot new startup making waves across town. For those of you who are not in the know, Ghafla! is a local entertainment website containing content and (soon) digital downloads from East Africa. What most of us don’t know is, how did Ghafla’s young founders get where they are today? We caught up with them as they shared with us their riveting story.

Ghafla! was founded by Mr. Majani and Lyosi Mwedekeli. Mr. Majani is the Head of Product Development, and Lyosi is the Head of Sales. Their story starts in 2009, when Majani was kicked out of JKUAT University after his lack of discipline and many distractions led him down a treacherous path. This was a serious blow to his self-esteem, not to mention the guilt he felt after wasting so much of his parents’ money on school fees. He said, “for me at that point in my life, it was all about making something of myself despite what had happened. The temptation to quit was very strong.” Not one to quit, Mr. Majani’s active mind gave birth to the idea of KenyanLyrics.com one month after his academic setback.

After one year of developing the website, tragedy also struck  his close friend, Lyosi Mwedekeli. During the same time that Mr. Majani had been running KenyanLyrics, Lyosi had been running African Eden, a website selling East African tours to the UK. During the height of the world’s financial crisis, the UK government changed its policy on tour company fees, and slapped a 6 million shilling fee on all tour businesses. This exorbitant government policy drove African Eden out of business. For a few weeks, Lyosi did not tell Majani what had happened, but it was not long till Majani asked him about African Eden, and he was forced to confess the bad news.

As the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed, and Mr. Majani immediately thought of a way to bring Lyosi into his company. They decided to embark on a ‘big project’ codenamed The Photorange, an event photography venture which would be sponsored by a big corporation. They approached Airtel, Orange, Jipange and others, who all showed fantastic initial interest, but eventually led them on a wild goose chase for 7 months straight. During that time, KenyanLyrics.com had been seriously neglected, and was headed towards the deadpool. Mr. Majani and Lyosi decided to drop ‘The Photorange’ and pursue KenyanLyrics full time. Eventually, they noticed that KenyanLyrics was a bit limited in terms of scope of content, and scalability, so they decided to pivot to a product named Ghafla!

One of the things that the Ghafla! team saw as key to their success was that their operational costs like rent and internet bills be subsidized. This saw them work from home for quite a bit of time, but as the team expanded, the need for an office became apparent. An office that would provide such subsidies was not available to them, until one day they paid a visit to Bishop Magua Centre, and found out about the Nailab. The Nailab turned out to be just what Team Ghafla! had been looking for all along and they immediately submitted their application for admission via the Nailab website. Unfortunately, they were not accepted. However, the boys at Ghafla! are not the type to admit defeat so easily.  After finding out they had not been chosen, they met up with Sam Gichuru, the Nailab Director, and pitched their business idea . Sam saw various flaws in their business plan, but he was swayed by the passion and determination that Lyosi and Majani showed, and welcomed them to the Nailab.

Only three days after being incubated at the Nailab, Ghafla! pitched their idea to 88mph, a Danish IT investment club, and won 25, 000 euros worth of funding. Suddenly, their long pursuit of happiness had become completely worth their while.
